Health Care Coverage Information

As a student at the University of Illinois, you pay two fees at registration which cover services that should meet most of your health care needs. They are the Health Service Fee and the Student Insurance Fee.

Health Service Fee

The Health Service Fee is prepayment for services provided by McKinley Health Center and the Counseling Center. The fee schedule is based on the number of semester hours for which you are registered - this fee cannot be waived. Students who are exempt from this fee because they are enrolled in Credit Range III or IV, may obtain services by paying the semester fee at the McKinley Health Center Business Office. The Health Service Fee covers office visits with doctors, nurse practitioners, mental health therapists, and health educators, as well as most x-rays and laboratory tests at no additional out-of-pocket expense. Many immunizations and medications are offered at low cost or no cost.

The Health Service Fee does not pay for:

  • Care received outside McKinley Health Center
  • Immunizations required by law prior to entrance to the University
  • Travel immunizations
  • Referrals made to a specialist outside McKinley.

Charges for these services are the responsibility of the student, but may be covered by insurance. We recommend that you check with your insurance carrier before receiving medical services outside McKinley Health Center

Student Insurance Fee

The Student Insurance Fee pays for the University sickness and accident insurance program for health care received outside of McKinley Health Center. Students are required either to pay this fee or to document that they have other health insurance coverage equivalent to the University plan. Payment Options at McKinley Heath Center:

McKinley Health Center accepts cash, checks, American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards, debit cards, or student account.

NOTE: A SERVICE FEE OF $30.00 WILL BE ASSESSED FOR EACH CHECK RETURNED FOR NON-SUFFICIENT FUNDS OR OTHER REASONS.
