Page 11: NexplanonNexplanon is a hormone-releasing birth control implant that is placed under the skin on the inner aspect of the upper arm. It is for women who prefer a long-acting method of birth control. Nexplanon prevents pregnancy for up to three years. At the end of the three years, the implant is removed and may be replaced by a new one if birth control is still desired.Nexplanon puts a steady low dose of hormone into the blood stream which keeps an egg from being released by the ovary. It also prevents sperm from reaching an egg.Your chance of getting pregnant is very low with the implant in place (less than 1 pregnancy per 100 women using the implant).Nexplanon’s effectiveness in very overweight women has not been studied. It is possible it may not be as effective. Side EffectsThe most common side effect of Nexplanon is a change in your normal bleeding pattern. Your periods may be longer or shorter than normal. The time between periods may vary and you may have spotting between periods.Less frequent side effects may be: mood swings, weight gain, headache, acne and depressed mood. if you have any questions or conceernsCall McKinley and schedule a consult visit with one of our physicians in Women’s Health at 217-333-2700.
