One case of meningococcal meningitis has been reported within the past week on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.

Please take precautions to protect yourself from this deadly disease. Meningitis is spread from person to person through prolonged close (less than 3 feet for 8 hours) contact.

  • Do not share cups or drinking glasses
  • Do not share eating utensils
  • Do not share toothbrushes, cigarettes, lipstick or anything that has been near someone else’s mouth
  • The disease also is spread by kissing


If you experience the symptoms of meningitis:

  • high fever
  • headache
  • stiff neck


Seek medical assisatnce IMMEDIATELY.
