What Viruses Do Vaccines Protect Against?

There are many flu viruses and they are constantly changing. The composition of U.S. flu vaccines is reviewed annually and updated to match circulating flu viruses. Flu vaccines protect against the three or four viruses that research suggests will be most common.

For the 2023-2024 Influenza season, McKinley Health Center will offer a four-component vaccine containing protection against the following Influenza A and Influenza B viruses:

  • an A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Darwin/9/2021 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Austria/1359417/2021-like virus (B/Victoria lineage); and
  • a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata lineage).

McKinley Health Center is using the Fluzone 23-24 and Fluarix 23-24 influenza (flu) vaccines during the 2023-2024 flu season. Both vaccines are quadrivalent.

See the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) flu page for additional information.
